For some time now newly admitted members to the Durham City Freemen have asked what happens next and how can they be involved with the organisation. The creation of a History Group is an attempt by the Development Group (formally the Communication Group) to engage with the general membership.

This unique opportunity for Freemen to be involved in a project with the University of Durham, is one we feel sure will be very rewarding and give a real insight about the Freeman’s life and work in Durham City.

The initial focus for the group will be to engage in a project that researches artefacts discovered and recovered by Gary Bankhead from the bed of the River Wear, with the aim of producing a booklet that will hopefully shed some light on the Freemen’s past.

Being a member of the group will also provide the opportunity for individuals to research their family history and perhaps discoverer ancestors that were also Freeman.

We are busy compiling a list of interested individuals and will be inviting them to an initial meeting, (by the end of May), when more detailed information will be available.

It is anticipated that the group will meet in the Town Hall on an evening starting at 6pm.

If you are interested in becoming a member of the History Group, or would like more information, please contact Eric Bulmer Chairman of the Wardens.
