Durham City Freemen Community Support

Durham City Freemen wish to announce that after ten years of providing grants to charitable causes in this area the Freemen’s Charitable Trust has ceased to exist, and is to replaced by a new scheme of giving called Community Support.

There has been an altruistic charitable role provided by Durham City Freemen within the Durham catchment area for a considerable time. The Wardens of the Freemen decided that they wished to continue with the tradition of giving and in May 2026 set out their procedures for the continuation of the work.

The purpose of it is to give financial support to local good causes. Previous recipients have included the Mayor’s charity, St. Cuthbert’s hospice, Durham City Remembrance parade and the Durham Cathedral Festival of Remembrance.

Chairman of Wardens Mr Garry Dunnill is quoted as saying:

‘Durham City Freemen are proud to continue the tradition of giving in support of local worthy causes. We hope that we can continue this philanthropic work to the best advantage of the city and its citizens. We invite applications for grant aid from local community groups.’

The new Community Support scheme will be launched at our Guild Day in the Town Hall on May 11th 2026
